Here's our round-up of the Martin Grech show;
Well this show was a much bigger success than we could have expected; not only was The Cavern rammed (very nearly sold out) but the atmosphere was great and the line-up was fantastic!
First up was an unscheduled set by Lloyd Williams who was with Martin Grech's crew and asked to play a few acoustic numbers. Never one's to turn down more live music, we happily accepted and watched him warm up the crowd with some great songs and a lovely voice, adding an extra dimension to the show. Hope to see more from Lloyd in future!
Next to take to the stage was our band - Mad Library. Unsure of how a guitar-less, instrumental band would go down with such a large 'rock' audience, we recieved a fantastic response and played what was probably our best gig yet! One new song, 'Stevie T' was debuted, and the whole set sounded fresher than ever. Thanks to everyone for the great reaction and praising feedback, and thanks to whoever it was we heard telling his friend, 'That was f@*#ing great!' after we played 'Big Kitty'!
Resonate impressed many with such a powerful sound for a band so young. Playing mostly new material, the band are constantly gathering confidence with a lot of energy on stage and all three members unleashing some hardcore screamage, contrasting well with their knack for melodies. Definitely a band to keep an eye on!
Summit made their live comeback after nearly a two-year absence and showed how much they have progressed. Newer songs are heavier with more complex arrangements, complimented by the contrasting 2 lead vocals and a really full, powerful sound from the band. A triumphant return, hopefully it won't be so long next time!
Martin Grech took to the stage next and captivated many of the crowd with his presence alone. Grech has a new band (including Rachel Stamp drummer, Robin!) and a much heavier sound which was too much for some. For the rest of us however it was a fantastic performance by one of the most exciting live acts around. It is difficult to take your eyes off the guy while he and the band create an awesome sound topped off by Grech's mightily impressive vocal range. A clutch of ace new songs, including downloadable single, 'I Am Chromosome' were played, alongside excellent renditions of older favourites such as 'Push' and 'Notorius'. Martin was able to further show off his vocal talent/ gift during a mid-set solo acoustic spot before being rejoined by the band, and finally winding up his set with the immense 'Dali'
Quite, quite stunning.
Big thankyous to everybody who came along, to Resonate and Summit for excellent sets, and especially to Martin Grech and his crew for agreeing to play a Lone Shark show, who all helped to make it (arguably) one of the best shows in ages; crammed full of excellent and eclectic live music and a definite buzz in the venue.
