Gaining further understanding of the music industry can be incredibly useful for anyone involved, whether by providing useful advice on the running of a company or making upcoming artists aware of their rights and what to look out for on their introduction to the industry.

There are many great books on the music industry, these are just a selection of those that we at Lone Shark have read and would recommend. Click on a title to find the book on Amazon.co.uk

'MMF Guide To Professional Music Management''
Excellent guide to most areas of the music industry from the Music Managers Forum. The guide looks at different areas (such as management, press, record label, publishers etc.) and explains their role, as well as discussing aspects such as contracts, personnel and finance. The guide is comprehensive and concise but without over-use of jargon. Not cheap at around £30, but a worthwhile investment!

Harrison, Ann; 'Music: The Business'
Another excellent and very useful book giving an overview of different sectors of the music industry. There is slightly more focus on the legal side of things (the author is a music lawyer), with many relevant examples of real-life music industry court cases etc.

Kemp, Chris; 'Music Industry, Management & Promotion'
Another informative book, giving an overview of the music industry, but with specific focus on event and gig promotion. It is littered with useful and entertaining anecdotes from the author's experience as a music promoter. The book is well worth a read to anybody who is thinking about event promotion, and most people currently working in that field could learn a thing or two from it as well!

Dann, A. & Underwood, J.; 'How To Succeed In The Music Business'
This book is aimed particularly at bands and songwriters new to the industry and provides a great foundation knowledge and introduction to the operations of the music industry, without overwhelming newcomers with information.
